Art for a Good Cause
By : Eagle Latitudes
The Port Aransas Animal Rehabilitation Keep in Texas, also known as The ARK, is an organization that’s known for its tireless efforts to save injured sea turtles and seabirds, as well as for conducting wildlife research. Turtle Trail 2010 is a fundraising program that benefits The ARK. Subtitled “Herons Happen!,” the program involves the sponsorship of heron sculptures by businesses and individuals. The cast aluminum herons are 34" tall and serve as a canvas for artists. Sponsors have their choice of art that has been selected by a jury and will be applied to a “blank” heron. The deadline for designs from artists is March 17; sponsors can see the winning designs online shortly thereafter at turtletrail.org, and choose the artist and art they wish to sponsor. Several completed works of “Heron Art” are expected to be ready for the first “Hatching” in late May. Additional works of art will be introduced at four more Hatchings in the summer. “Herons Happen!” will culminate with a gala dinner and grand auction of the herons in November 2010. Turtle Trail 2008 had 41 sculptures for sale at the Great Turtle Release Auction in Port Aransas, raising a whopping $44,000.
