Tortola, Land of The Dove
By : Eagle Latitudes

Local legend has it that when Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Tortola he named it The Land of the Turtle Doves. Today, this beautiful island boasts some of the finest beaches and the best surfing spots in the Caribbean. The largest and most popular island of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola lures visitors from far and wide to its shores to relax and enjoy life. And though it may no longer be known as The Land of the Turtle Doves, it may soon be known as The Land of The Dove… restaurant, that is.

Consistently rated the No. 1 restaurant in the country by TripAdvisor, The Dove was created to bring fine dining and world-class wines to the British Virgin Islands. Owners Paloma Helm and Scott Hart rebuilt a historic 1912 West Indian gingerbread cottage to house the restaurant.

Every evening, The Dove serves up a delicious fusion of French and Asian cuisine to a packed house of residents and tourists. Its intimate dining room seats 40 guests, so reservations are highly recommended. Featuring a menu that changes with the seasons, The Dove is committed to using only the freshest local ingredients, produce and seafood. Luckily, their most popular dish, The Dove Steak, is on the menu year-round. An Angus beef ribeye, The Dove Steak is crusted with mushroom and Parmesan and served with black truffle jus, white truffle and blue cheese potato pavé and prosciutto wrapped asparagus—it’s amazing! Executive Chef Travis Phillips, originally from Canada, honed his skills in New York City before becoming head chef at The Dove.

To get the full Dove experience, get there before dinner and spend time in the outdoor patio, which surrounds an exotic mango tree, and the bar area. Head bartender Sean Anderson is famous for his old-time cocktails with a modern twist, such as the six-week-old, oak-barrel-aged Manhattan. If you’re more of a wine lover, then you may have just found your tropical paradise. The Dove boasts the largest wine list in the country with an extensive by-the-glass selection.
